| LSU To Send Pep Band To Seattle, Four SEC Road Games |
| | After making cost reductions to three of the band's four trips to conference road games during the 2009 football season, LSU Athletics has decided to send a pep band to the game at the University of Washington. The fact remains that the LSU Athletic Department has been asked to contribute more financially to the University this year than ever before in the wake of state budget cuts to higher education. With an increase in administrative fees levied on University auxiliaries rising from 3 percent to 5 percent, and an increase in student fees the athletic department must pay for its 450 student-athletes, LSU Athletics will be passing an additional $2.5 million to the University in the coming academic year. The athletic department must cut costs in various areas, and expenditures for band trips is one area that will be impacted. Continue... |
| Tiger Basketball Team Faces Mississippi State For 1st Place In The SEC West |
| | BATON ROUGE ? The LSU men?s basketball team, coming off a strong week of two Southeastern Conference wins, tries to keep the momentum rolling forward when it takes on Mississippi State University Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. There is no television for the game, but the radio broadcast will be available on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (New Country 100.7 FM The Tiger in Baton Rouge) and in the ?Geaux Zone? of LSUsports.net. Tickets for the game start at $14 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 3-12) and are available online at LSUsports.net and beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the upper ticket windows of the Maravich Center. At halftime of Wednesday?s game, the championship trophy of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl will be presented to Coach Les Miles and the LSU football team by bowl officials. | | BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU is ranked No. 2 in the 2009 Baseball America preseason poll released Tuesday. The Tigers are one of three 2008 College World Series teams to appear in the preseason Top 10, along with No. 3 North Carolina and No. 7 Rice. LSU was ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball magazine preseason poll released last month, and the Tigers were No. 2 in the NCBWA poll released last week. Texas A&M is No. 1 in the Baseball America poll, which ranks three other Big 12 teams in the Top 10 ? No. 4 Texas, No. 8 Baylor and No. 10 Missouri. | | BATON ROUGE ? Andrew Hatch, who started at quarterback in LSU?s first three games of the 2008 season, has decided to transfer back to Harvard, head coach Les Miles announced on Thursday. Hatch started his collegiate career at Harvard, playing junior varsity football for the Crimson in 2005. Hatch joined the LSU football team in the summer of 2007 after sitting out all of 2006 and most of 2007 while serving on a church mission. ?I have been in contact with Coach Crowton and Coach Miles to let them know that after much consideration, I have decided to go forward in a different direction,? Hatch said on Thursday. ?I plan on returning to Harvard, where I began my college education, to continue my studies. LSU wide receiver Brandon LaFell has opted to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft, the junior announced on Thursday. ?I?m declaring for the NFL Draft, but I?m not going to hire an agent which leaves the door open for me to change my mind in the next 72 hours,? LaFell said. ?LSU is a great place. It?s a place that has given me the opportunity to grow both as a person and a player. I?ve been a part of some great teams and had some great teammates and it?s a place that I?m going to miss.? Per NCAA rules, underclassmen have 72 hours after the early-entry deadline to revoke their declaration provided that they have not signed with an agent. LSU running back Charles Scott and offensive tackle Ciron Black both announced at a press conference on Wednesday that they will return to school for their senior season. ?If you listen to those guys talk, they put a priority on their team and education,? LSU coach Les Miles said of the decision made by Scott and Black. ?This is a time when the decisions are made by the people who are affected the most. I can only tell you that it?s a very unselfish decision. Both men would have made quality livings in the NFL. | | BATON ROUGE ? After hitting at the old Tiger Park, the LSU softball team finished practice Monday by breaking in the new Tiger Park with its first defensive session. The Tigers started the 60-minute session in their infield and outfield units before wrapping up with situational team defense to get used to all the nuances the new ballpark has to offer. ?It was an awesome experience for our players,? head coach Yvette Girouard said. ?The older players thought they were on a road trip, but it?s their home now. The new park plays dramatically different than the old park. The outfielders are looking into a massive roof. The ball carries different and plays different off the fences. Brick Haley, a veteran defensive line coach who has spent time in both the NFL and the Southeastern Conference, has been named the defensive line coach at LSU, head coach Les Miles announced on Friday. Haley comes to LSU from the Chicago Bears where he served as the defensive line coach for the NFL franchise for the past two seasons. In addition to his stop in the NFL, Haley coached three years at Mississippi State and has also served as a defensive coordinator at the collegiate level at both Baylor and Troy. ?It was very important that we hire a defensive line coach with a great background,? Miles said. ?He?s been a head coach and a defensive coordinator at the collegiate level. LSU won its 13th consecutive home game dating back to last year, rallying from seven down with nine minutes to play to score an impressive 64-52 win over Washington State Saturday afternoon at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Tigers finished the game on an 11-0 run to move its record to 10-1 on the year while Washington State fell to 8-4. LSU?s 13 game winning streak, dating back to the final three games of last season, is tied for the seventh longest in the 38 years of the Maravich Center. The battle of teams that were nationally-ranked in different defense categories lived up to its billing, but LSU found the hot hands in the second half and fed off the play of its three guards: Marcus Thornton, Bo Spencer and Garrett Temple. | | BATON ROUGE ? The Les Miles Show presented by Capital One Bank returns to Atlanta for the second time in four years as the one-hour radio show will be held on Monday, Dec. 29 at 8 p.m. EST. The Les Miles Show will take place at Stats, which is billed as Atlanta?s premier sports restaurant with 70 high-definition televisions. Stats, located at 300 Marietta Street, is just one block from the CNN Center and the Georgia Dome and also serves as the home for the Atlanta Falcons post-game radio show. The radio show, which is hosted by the Voice of the Tigers Jim Hawthorne, will preview LSU?s Chick-fil-A Bowl game against Georgia Tech.
