| Ralston Turner To Consider Transfer |
| | BATON ROUGE – LSU head men’s basketball coach Johnny Jones announced on Wednesday that forward Ralston Turner has been given a release that would allow him to weigh other options regarding his basketball future. The release is good for any school outside the member schools of the Southeastern Conference. “Upon my arrival about three weeks ago,” said Jones, “in my initial meeting with Ralston he indicated that he had previously discussed with Coach Trent Johnson that he might consider transferring from LSU. I told him that we would get together to discuss that at the end of the semester and that if he wished he would be granted permission to explore other opportunities. “I have encouraged him to explore other options with the opportunity to return provided he is 100 percent an LSU Tiger,” Jones said. | | BATON ROUGE – LSU men’s basketball Coach Johnny Jones announced Tuesday that veteran bench coach and recruiter Robert Kirby will be joining the LSU basketball program. Kirby, who has served the past two seasons at Georgetown as an assistant coach, will be familiar to LSU fans and those in the Southeastern Conference after serving two stints at Mississippi State, including a 12-year run as the top assistant on Rick Stansbury’s staff at State from 1998-2010. “Coach Kirby will be a great addition to our basketball staff here at LSU,” said Coach Jones. “He has a strong knowledge of the game. He is a great teacher on the floor and developer of players. | LSU To Send Pep Band To Seattle, Four SEC Road Games |
| | After making cost reductions to three of the band's four trips to conference road games during the 2009 football season, LSU Athletics has decided to send a pep band to the game at the University of Washington. The fact remains that the LSU Athletic Department has been asked to contribute more financially to the University this year than ever before in the wake of state budget cuts to higher education. With an increase in administrative fees levied on University auxiliaries rising from 3 percent to 5 percent, and an increase in student fees the athletic department must pay for its 450 student-athletes, LSU Athletics will be passing an additional $2.5 million to the University in the coming academic year. The athletic department must cut costs in various areas, and expenditures for band trips is one area that will be impacted. Continue... |
| Tiger Basketball Team Faces Mississippi State For 1st Place In The SEC West |
| | BATON ROUGE – The LSU men’s basketball team, coming off a strong week of two Southeastern Conference wins, tries to keep the momentum rolling forward when it takes on Mississippi State University Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. There is no television for the game, but the radio broadcast will be available on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (New Country 100.7 FM The Tiger in Baton Rouge) and in the “Geaux Zone” of LSUsports.net. Tickets for the game start at $14 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 3-12) and are available online at LSUsports.net and beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the upper ticket windows of the Maravich Center. At halftime of Wednesday’s game, the championship trophy of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl will be presented to Coach Les Miles and the LSU football team by bowl officials. | | BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU is ranked No. 2 in the 2009 Baseball America preseason poll released Tuesday. The Tigers are one of three 2008 College World Series teams to appear in the preseason Top 10, along with No. 3 North Carolina and No. 7 Rice. LSU was ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball magazine preseason poll released last month, and the Tigers were No. 2 in the NCBWA poll released last week. Texas A&M is No. 1 in the Baseball America poll, which ranks three other Big 12 teams in the Top 10 – No. 4 Texas, No. 8 Baylor and No. 10 Missouri. | | BATON ROUGE – Andrew Hatch, who started at quarterback in LSU’s first three games of the 2008 season, has decided to transfer back to Harvard, head coach Les Miles announced on Thursday. Hatch started his collegiate career at Harvard, playing junior varsity football for the Crimson in 2005. Hatch joined the LSU football team in the summer of 2007 after sitting out all of 2006 and most of 2007 while serving on a church mission. “I have been in contact with Coach Crowton and Coach Miles to let them know that after much consideration, I have decided to go forward in a different direction,” Hatch said on Thursday. “I plan on returning to Harvard, where I began my college education, to continue my studies. | | BATON ROUGE – LSU wide receiver Brandon LaFell has opted to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft, the junior announced on Thursday. “I’m declaring for the NFL Draft, but I’m not going to hire an agent which leaves the door open for me to change my mind in the next 72 hours,” LaFell said. “LSU is a great place. It’s a place that has given me the opportunity to grow both as a person and a player. I’ve been a part of some great teams and had some great teammates and it’s a place that I’m going to miss.” Per NCAA rules, underclassmen have 72 hours after the early-entry deadline to revoke their declaration provided that they have not signed with an agent. LaFell has until Sunday afternoon to revoke his declaration which would then allow him to return to LSU for his senior season. Continue... |

| | BATON ROUGE – LSU running back Charles Scott and offensive tackle Ciron Black both announced at a press conference on Wednesday that they will return to school for their senior season. “If you listen to those guys talk, they put a priority on their team and education,” LSU coach Les Miles said of the decision made by Scott and Black. “This is a time when the decisions are made by the people who are affected the most. I can only tell you that it’s a very unselfish decision. Both men would have made quality livings in the NFL. Both men are postponing a good, high-paying career to be seniors at LSU, to get their degree and enjoy being part of a team. | | BATON ROUGE – After hitting at the old Tiger Park, the LSU softball team finished practice Monday by breaking in the new Tiger Park with its first defensive session. The Tigers started the 60-minute session in their infield and outfield units before wrapping up with situational team defense to get used to all the nuances the new ballpark has to offer. “It was an awesome experience for our players,” head coach Yvette Girouard said. “The older players thought they were on a road trip, but it’s their home now. The new park plays dramatically different than the old park. The outfielders are looking into a massive roof. The ball carries different and plays different off the fences. We’re excited to get out here and the new Tiger Park is going to be a jewel in the realm of college softball.” Continue... |

| | TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The LSU Tigers have put a 30-point loss to Utah behind them and now look ahead to the start of a new season here Sunday afternoon – Southeastern Conference play. The Tigers, for the sixth time since 2000, open SEC play against the University of Alabama, this time at the Tide’s Coleman Coliseum at 12:30 p.m. as the feature Sunday men’s game of the first weekend of SEC play. The game will be televised regionally by Raycom Sports (including WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge and Louisiana affiliates in Alexandra-KLAZ, Lafayette-KLAF, Monroe-KEJB and New Orleans-WUPL). | | BATON ROUGE – Brick Haley, a veteran defensive line coach who has spent time in both the NFL and the Southeastern Conference, has been named the defensive line coach at LSU, head coach Les Miles announced on Friday. Haley comes to LSU from the Chicago Bears where he served as the defensive line coach for the NFL franchise for the past two seasons. In addition to his stop in the NFL, Haley coached three years at Mississippi State and has also served as a defensive coordinator at the collegiate level at both Baylor and Troy. “It was very important that we hire a defensive line coach with a great background,” Miles said. “Brick has experience in both the SEC and the NFL which speaks to his ability to coach at the highest levels of the game. | | BATON ROUGE – Ron Cooper, who has nine years of head coaching experience at the collegiate level, has joined the LSU coaching staff and will serve as the Tigers’ secondary coach, Les Miles announced on Wednesday. “Ron Cooper is going to bring a great deal of experience and coaching expertise to our secondary,” Miles said. “He’s been a head coach and a defensive coordinator at the collegiate level. He’s extremely qualified and he will do a great job of mentoring the players on our team. “I’ve seen up close what he can do with a secondary having played South Carolina the past two years. He has great knowledge of defense, in particular the secondary. We are very excited about having him join our staff and look forward to the contributions he will make to our program.” Continue... |
