Third Chance The Charm For Fields

It took three injuries to get Arby Fields a third chance to get into centerfield for LSU. It may take an act of congress to get him out the lineup now. “It’s a great story,” LSU head coach Paul Mainieri said. “This kid is just amazing.” A few weeks ago, however, it would have been just as amazing to think that the No. 1-ranked Tigers would enter tonight’s marquee weekend series with No. 2 Kentucky with Fields as one of their hottest hitters and a magician in centerfield. “He struggled in the fall practices,” Mainieri said bluntly. “We still gave him a chance in the early season and he really didn’t take advantage of it.” That’s putting it mildly. Fields wasn’t hitting and, by all accounts, looked bewildered in centerfield and lost on the base paths. “Coach Mainieri had told me he wanted me to make an impact,” Fields said. “I was pressing instead of relaxing and playing like I know how. I was trying to do way too much. I wasn’t doing what got me here.”
